Batelco launches VoIP service

Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) has announced that customers will be able to make VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls to International destinations on Batelco's fixed and mobile services. The service can be accessed by dialling 122 followed by the country code (without 00) and then the desired number. Calls will be charged per second and there will be one rate throughout the day. The prices are very attractive with calls to India charged at 55 fils per minute, Pakistan at 60 fils, USA and UK 40 fils and 90 fils per minute respectively. [AMEInfo.com]
Etisalat likely to buy company in Iraq

Etisalat said on Tuesday that its planned Middle East acquisition will 'likely' be in Iraq, reported Reuters. An Etisalat official said last month that the firm was in final-stage talks to buy a majority stake worth up to $1bn in a Middle East telecoms operator this year but did not announce the country. Abu Dhabi to invest $8.4bn in AMD

US-based Advanced Micro Devices plans to spin off its manufacturing plants as part of an $8.4bn investment from the Abu Dhabi government, reported Bloomberg. Abu Dhabi will pay AMD $700m for a stake in a new company that will own two plants in Germany and build another in New York. The new company, which will assume $1.2bn of AMD's debt, will receive as much as $6bn from Abu Dhabi to expand the factories and get $1.4bn in operating capital. Abu Dhabi will also pay $314m to double its stake in AMD to 19%. [AMEInfo.com]
Du to post $11m profit

UAE-based telecom operator Du has been forecast to post a year on year net profit of Dhs40.94m ($11m) for the third quarter - its first since launching last year, according to an industry forecast by Al Mal Capital Research. The predicted turnaround comes at least two quarters earlier than expected for Du, which said last year that it expected to become profitable only by the first quarter of 2009. According to the report, du's revenue is expected to grow to Dhs937.69m, up 127.5% year on year, reported The National. [AMEInfo.com]
